Mid-State Launches Food Safety Training Team

December 14, 2017

LYNCHBURG VA— The Mid-State Group has assembled a food safety training team to help local establishments prepare for Virginia food preparation laws that go into effect next year.

By July 1 2018, Virginia food establishments must have at least one employee with management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and service who is a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM). In that person’s absence, there should always be a person in charge who has the authority to direct the flow of food who meets the knowledge requirements in the Virginia Food Code, even if that person is not certified.

Mid-State’s Rusty Goodwin, Joni Organ, and Amanda Kintgen are registered instructors, managers, and/or exam proctors who are conducting ServSafe™ food, beverage and allergan safety training. ServSafe™ is administered by the National Restaurant Association and is accredited by ANSI and the Conference for Food Protection.
Certification provides managers with in-depth knowledge of proper food safety practices for use in their facilities. Over five million U.S. food service professionals have been certified.

“We are pleased offer the ServSafe™ Certified Food Protection Manager class through Mid-State Academy,” says John Austin S. Basten, president of The Mid-State Group. “The class gives local food service employees the knowledge and practices necessary to operate safely, drastically reducing the potential for foodborne illness as well as fulfill Virginia health requirements.”
Proper food safety practices wastes less food, reduces staff sick days and turnover along with reducing potential health code violations, fines and negative publicity, such as the recent food-borne illness events with major franchises such as Chipotle.
“From the moment it comes in from your vendors to the instant it’s served to your customers, protecting the flow and handling of food can make all the difference when you and your staff are properly trained,” says Rusty Goodwin, owner of Carol’s Restaurant in Forest and ServSafe proctor.By having a knowledgeable and more reliable staff, you’ve got the best chance of keeping customers healthy and happy so they keep coming back and adding to your bottom line,” adds Goodwin.
